Best Grass for South Florida - Different Types of Grass - For Different Seasons

In South Florida I recommend the ST. Augustine Grass because it adapts well in warm and humid areas. St. Augustinegrass is the most commonly used lawn grass throughout the state  of Florida.  St. Augustinegrass can be planted year-round in Florida, the best time to plant any warm-season grass is during its time of active growth.
St. Augustinegrass requires fertilizer to maintain a healthy growth. At least once a year it's required to use supplemental irrigation. Pesticides may be needed from time to time, but their use  can be minimized if  irrigation, fertilization are done correctly.


Weed-Free lawn begins with the right turf for your landscape. A grass in sunny South Florida, won’t work in Chicago, Illinois. The amount of shade, sun and traffic should play a main part in the selection of your grass. Cool-season grasses favor less summer months. Warm-season grasses are of tropical origin and thrive during summer heat. Here is a list of some names of grass depending on your region:

     ST. Augustine Grass - Large, flat stems and broad, coarse leaves. Thrives in humid climate.

      Kentucky BlueGrass - Easily established by seed or sod. When fertilized it displays fine texture and deep green color.
      Mowing Height: 2 to 3 inches
      Growth Rate: Slow to Moderate
      Region: Cool-Season and transistion grass.




      Centipede- Low-maintenance, medium textured grass. Suited for sandy soils with low fertillity.
      Mowing Height: 1 to 2 inches
      Growth Rate: Slow
      Region: Warm-Season grass.
      Perennial Ryegrass- Tough, wiry, fine texture grass that grows quickly from seed and can stand heavy traffic.
      Mowing Height: 3/4  to 1 1/2 inches
      Growth Rate: Rapid
      Region: Cool-Season grass.
